Footsteps Toward My Savior – 26 August 2011

Each Friday I consider the foundational truths that God reveals in HisWord.
The Bible is an intimate love letter from the Creator of the Universe to all of humanity,
leading me in footsteps toward my Savior, Jesus Christ.

  1. God likes BFFs. ECCLESIASTIES 4:9~10 ESV

  2. Who’s my daddy? God is. JOHN 14:23 ESV

  3. Jesus comforts me. 2 CORINTHIANS 7:6 ESV

  4. Jesus heals my broken heart.  PSALM 121:1~2 ESV

LOVE (won’t let go)

“with a strong hand
and an outretched arm,
for his steadfast love
endures forever.”

PSALM 136:12 ESV

I’m glad that I have Someone to look up to. Today, I just need someone to rely on, I don’t think I can make it through the carpools and checklists…not on my own, that is. Grace is such a beautiful thing, but how do I make room for it between groceries and garbage? Like a lost little girl standing in the candy aisle, I find myself easily distracted by a plethora of worldly ideals, with little thought of the consequences to my peace of mind. The rush of accomplishment (Goodbye, Laundry Mountain!), the thrill of conquest (Is ketchup considered a vegetable? Oh, well…). But if I measure my life by the checkmarks on my To-Do List, then the doldrums leave me woefully incomplete. I’ll never be able to hold a candle to June Cleaver, and that’s the meat of it: why chase after the sweetness of success (which leaves me always thirsting for more), when I can accept the blessing of faithfulness (which does not measure my accomplishments but my perseverance). A Mommy’s Guide to Grace: slow & steady wins the race! So, the next time I find myself standing in Life’s candy aisle looking for a quick success to bolster my self-worth, I need only turn to see my Father waiting for me, with an outstretched arm. His love is all I need.

LOVE (walked in)

“But while he was still a long way off,
his father saw him
and felt compassion,
and ran and embraced him
and kissed him.”

LUKE 15:20 ESV

Life is a journey…and we’re all just travelers along the way. Sometimes running. Sometimes waiting. Sometimes thumbing a ride. We’re all chasing dreams and looking for answers written in the sand. Often, I can’t see the forest for the trees. But though I may stumble through life and wander off the trail, God always guides me back. My eternal roadmap was written to remind me of where I stand in His plan. Longitude: I’m desperately lost in the darkness of sin. Latitude: He has forgiven me by His blood. Jesus Christ walked this earth so that I could follow Him. Destination: Home

 Echoes of Mercy:

\”Your Hands\” by JJ Heller

LOVE (like a hurricane)

“For we know that
if the tent that is
our earthly home
is destroyed,
we have a building from God,
a house not made with hands,
eternal in the heavens.”
2 CORINTHIANS 5:1 ESV

It is always darkest just before the sunrise. There seems to be a contagious insanity gnawing at the fiber of humanity, like rats in the attic. Each day filled with more news of heartbreak and tragedy. There are many faces to sin, and none of us are immune. But we are offered a remedy: the Hands that cradle our world are open to carry our burdens…and the Eyes that never sleep watch over us with love. The Voice that spoke creation into existence is calling out our name…when we find ourselves lost in the dark, and life doesn’t make sense, it is then that we must run to Jesus Christ. For there we find perfect peace and rest.

“Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope.
This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.”
PSALM 119:49-50

Footsteps Toward My Savior – 22 July 2011

Each Friday I consider the foundational truths that God reveals in HisWord.
The Bible is an intimate love letter from the Creator of the Universe to all of humanity,
leading me in footsteps toward my Savior, Jesus Christ.

  1. God makes a way for me. PSALM 119:45 ESV

  2. In Jesus is life and truth. JOHN 14:6 ESV

  3. God has all the answers. 1 CORINTHIANS 3:19 ESV

  4. Jesus forgives…and forgets.  PSALM 103:12 ESV

Walk (10,000 miles)

“as far as the east
is from the west,
so far does he remove
our transgressions from us.”
PSALM 103:12 ESV

I wish I could shed this tired, frail body…to emerge anew like a butterfly fresh from a chrysalis. I wish I could leave behind my self-entitled mindset…like a hermit crab searching for a larger shell to call home.  To open my mind, my heart, and my hands to those around me who need to see a kind soul in the midst of a cruel world. I’ve heard it said that everyone has an Achilles’ heel, which despite overall strength poses a deadly weakness. Hmmm..sugar comes to mind. Seriously, though…I can handle tightened belts, and candles burnt at both ends, and I’ve developed quite a taste for the cornucopia of craziness that I carry with me 24/7 (a.k.a. my kids). But, then there are those moments of fear: for my future (will we ever find a job/a home of our own?); for my children (4 is hard enough…don’t even mention 14! Can you say: curfew?); and for myself (Achilles’ heel? Why, I got the whole leg!). Fear has the ability to subdue our minds and our hearts into isolation. But, I don’t stand alone. I know that whatever fears chase me, I am secure in the arms of my Heavenly Father. So, whether I run, or limp, or fall…He is there with arms wide open.

Walk (the Line)

“For the wisdom
of this world
is folly with God.”
1 CORINTHIANS 3:19 ESV

Where does the line stand? Between conservative/liberal? Between art/an idea? Between freedom of speech/putting your foot in your mouth? Between right/wrong? Between sin/salvation? As followers of Christ we are called not to follow the crowd, but to blaze a trail. Real faith walks the line, being in the world/but not of it. In the footsteps that Jesus walked on earth we find a path full of passion, forgiveness, and most of all, love. The cross He carried carved a line into stone-faced sin, leading all who follow Jesus to freedom and abundant life.
Walk the Line.

Walk (THIS WAY)!

“Jesus said to him,
I am the way,
and the truth,
and the life.
No one comes to the Father
except through me.”
JOHN 14:6 ESV

Every moment of your life is a symphony orchestrated by God’s hand. He loves us enough to take the good, the bad, and the ugly and from it create something of enduring beauty.
Think about it.

Walk (the road less travelled)

“and I shall walk in a wide place,
for I have sought your precepts.”
PSALM 119:45 ESV

There is such freedom to be found in God’s ways. It has always been a natural reaction for me to think of religious law as stifling and constraining. Like a little child who does not understand the dangers of playing in traffic. However, when I shift my understanding to view God as a loving Father, I see a deeper blessing within obedience. How many times have I, as a mother, tried to teach my own children the ways that will benefit them in life: healthy eating (But, I want gummy bears for breakfast!), consideration to others (Me first! No, me first!), and the inherent value of all life (That’s okay…there’s lots more fireflies!). But, the lessons are learned slowly and with reservation (What Mom doesn’t know won’t hurt her!). I walked in their little shoes once upon a time, and learned for myself that Life (whether spiritul or physical) follows certain unavoidable laws (such as: gravity). Like cavities, sibling rivalry, and squished bugs, the consequences remain…but so do the blessings.
